A Fine Dutch Silver-Mounted Hunting Sword
Dutch Silver Marks For 1838, Unidentified Maker's Mark JGM
With broad tapering blade with broad central fuller over its entire length on each side, double-edged at the point and etched and gilt against a reblued ground with sporting trophies and scrolling foliage inhabited by birds and animals, a sportsman in a wooded landscape on the front, and a stag on the back, the forte etched with sword-cutler's details 'C. van Wagtendonk' and 'te Amsterdam', the hilt comprising downbent shell decorated with an applied raised stag on a roundel with two addorsed hind's heads above, rectangular quillon-block, the outer side with a pair of hunting horns suspended from a ribbon on a punched roundel, the inner side with a spray of foliage also on a punched ground, straight foliate quillons each with circular terminal bearing a dog's head on each side, silver grip-straps each with a chased central line of laurel, pommel-cap chased with designs of leaves, silver button, and fluted ivory grip-scales set on the front with a vacant oval silver escutcheon (replaced), in original silver scabbard embossed and chased along each side with panels of fronds all against a punched ground, and with frog-hook chased with a lion-mask, a panel of laurel and overlapping chevrons above a small acorn finial
