Portrait of Edward Law, Earl Ellenborough seated in a library oil on canvas 42.5 x 35.5cm (16 3/4 x 14in).
Edward Law (1790-1871) became a Tory MP in 1813, before succeeding his father to the peerage in 1818. In 1828 he became Lord Privy Seal before transferring to the presidency of the Board of Control. He then continued a successful career as Governor-General of India and first Lord of the Admiralty in 1846.
The portrait above the fireplace in this painting is a version of Sir Thomas Lawrence's painting of Law's father.
