R.F.A.); Queen's South Africa 1899-1902, four bars, Belmont, Modder River, Paardeberg, Johannesburg (2782 Bomb:D.Bird. 75th Bty R.F.A.); King's South Africa, two bars, S.A.01, S.A.02 (2782 Cpl D.Bird. R.F.A.); 1914-15 Star (2782 B.S.Mjr D.Bird. R.F.A.); British War and Victory Medal with M.I.D. Oakleaf (Major D.Bird.); Defence Medal; Army Long Service and Good Conduct, G.V.R. (2782 Sjt:D.Bird.     For conspicuous gallantry on the 1st June 1915, on the Gallipoli Peninsula, when he formed part of a voluntary gun detachment for a naval 12-pr. gun, which was in action in an open position under heavy shell fire for nearly an hour, at a range of 700 yards from the enemy's trenches. Serjeant Major Bird unhesitatingly assumed the most dangerous position in the gun detachment, and showed a fine example of disregard for personal danger and devotion to duty.

    Served with the advance on Kimberley including actions at Belmont and Modder River, operations in the Orange Free State, including operations at Paardeberg, operations in the Transvaal including action near Johannesburg. Served at Gallipoli from 25th 25.4.1915 to 3.1.1916. Mesopotamia 7.3.1916 to 28.12.1917. Egyptian Expeditionary Force 4.3.1918 to 24.3.1918. France and Belgium 12.3.1918 to 11.11.1918. Was also wounded during WW1.

    The lot includes various photographs, death certificate, a telegram, a Scottish clan badge, a Royal Naval and Military Tounament silver medal, engraved (Best Man at Arms Mounted Sergt D.Bird 75th Bty: R.F.A.) and further around the rim (1st Peshawar Division Assault at Arms 1909), and newspaper cuttings relating to his death at Brock Barracks in Reading in July 1947, while attending a memorial service to the Officers and Men of the Royal Berkshire Regiment who fell in WW2. He attended the service as a representative of the Theale British Legion of which he was a founder and former chairman.
