    For conspicuous gallantry in action. He commanded his own battalion and other units with the greatest courage and initiative, repulsing an enemy attack made by nine and a half battalions. He set a splendid example to his men throughout the operations.

    Lieutenant Colonel E.F.Thackeray was born in 1870 he served in Chitral, Matabele Rebellion 1896 and South Africa 1899-1902.
