  • Major James Randolph Gyllencreutz was lost at sea on 10th April 1917 whilst aboard H.M.H.T. Salta which suffered a mine explosion, 1/2 mile North from Whilst Buoy, Le Havre. He was the only son of James and Julia Gyllencreutz of Chelmer, 19 Lion Gate Gardens, Richmond. He was a native of Liverpool. He is commemorated on the Salta Memorial in the Ste. Marie Cemetry, Le Havre.

    The lot comes with boxes of issue for WW1 medals, 25 letters of recommendation/testimonial, slip for BWM and Victory Medal, 1914-1918 Commemorative scoll with his details attached. Newspaper cutting concerning his death, 3 certificates from the University of London and 1 from St.Thomas's Medical College.

    The newspaper cutting comments on him being picked up by a rescue ship which was subsequently torpedoed. Prior to his WW1 service he had served on Royal Mail steamers but at the outbreak of war he was based at St.John's Infirmary in Wandsworth. At the start of the war he was employed to examine recruits and was later transferred to France to a base hospital. He then went to the Dardanelles in charge of a hospital ship, but in the late period he was in charge of ambulance trains etc, in this country rejoining his ship. A resident of Richmond he was a popular individual and it was a great loss to family and friends.
