Saleroom notices

  • Footnote for this Lot: This portrait is almost certainly of Florence Adelina Hess (1891-1974.) Florence Hess was born in Leeds and studied at the Leeds School of Art. Here, she was a pupil under Mark Fisher and Mark Senior. Senior became her mentor, encouraging her to paint on the East Yorkshire coast, particularly at Runswick Bay, where she had a studio. Stylistically there are strong similarities between the two artists’ work particularly the handling of the brush and tonal palette. Hess became Senior’s most able student. She became his personal assistant and more importantly, his model for several portraits.
