Arthur David Waley (1889-1966) was an English Orientalist and Sinologist.
He was the son of the economist David Frederick Schloss (he took his Mother’s maiden name, Waley, in 1914) and was educated at Rugby School and King’s College, Cambridge where he read Classics.
Waley worked as Assistant Keeper of Oriental Prints and Manuscripts at the British Museum from 1913 to 1929. During this time he taught himself Chinese and Japanese, initially to help him with the cataloguing of the collection. However, after leaving this post he dedicated his time to writing and translating Chinese and Japanese poetry. He went on to produce a total of 22 books, including Japanese Poetry: The Uta (1919), Introduction to the Study of Chinese Painting (1923), The Tale of Genji (6 volumes, 1921-33), Monkey (1942) and The Secret History of the Mongols (1963).
He met the dance critic and writer Beryl de Zoete in 1918 and they lived together until her death in 1962. In 1966 he married Alison Robinson.
He lived in Bloomsbury for over forty years and had a number of friends amongst the Bloomsbury Group. A number of them, including Roger Fry were old friends from Cambridge.
He was elected an honorary fellow of King’s College Cambridge in 1945, received a CBE in 1952, the Queen’s medal for Poetry in 1953 and the Order of Companions of Honour in 1956.
He died in London in June 1966 and is buried in Highgate Cemetery.
