Opalescent Ammonite in Matrix
Placenticeras meeki
Cretaceous
Bear Paw Formation, Alberta, Canada
Displaying the lustrous iridescent colors seen in the finest specimens from this locality, a beautiful ammonite on matrix exhibits a brilliant sheen of primarily red, with some green color. The extraordinarily brilliant colors are caused by the combination of millions of years of compression, having been covered with a layer of ice over one mile deep during the Ice Age, and the mineralization of iron, copper and silica precipitated from volcanic ash.
Ammonite diameter measures 12 1/2in. Matrix measures 18 x 22in
