Modern full red levant, upper cover with double gilt rule enclosing gilt poppy arrangement surrounding oval glazed portrait of Thackeray painted on ivory, lower cover with double gilt rule panel, spine in six single gilt-ruled compartments, two of which are gilt-lettered, the others with gilt poppy arrangement, a.e.g., gilt-decorated dentelles, turquoise moiré silk endpapers, by Bayntun-Riviere. Lacks half-title, some plates with light foxing, else generally internally clean, spine slightly faded, else fine.

First edition, early issue with most first issue points, though with engraved title dated “1848.”
