Footnotes

  • The present lot is a copy after a portrait of 1813 by Thomas Phillips. The painting originally belonged to Byron and hung in Newstead Abbey until the Abbey was sold in 1817 to Colonel Thomas Wildman. The new owner requested a portrait of the poet and Byron sent him Phillip's painting, with the request that it should always hang in the drawing room at Newstead, where it remains today.
