Footnotes

  • The present lot dates from the middle of the 1830s. Cotman visited Normandy on three occasions; in 1817, 1818 and 1820. Cotman produced a large quantity of drawings of Normandy during these three visits although the majority of these works were sold by Cotman at Christies in 1824. Whilst the earlier views of Normandy depict specific places and buildings, a number of the subsequent works, including lot 64 depict scenes and architecture from Cotman's imagination.
