(n/a) Raden Basoeki Abdullah (Indonesian, 1915-1993)
An Indonesian beauty signed 'B. Abdullah' (lower left) oil on canvas 45 x 36 cm. (17¾ x 14¼ in.)
Provenance: Purchased from the artist by the current owner's grandfather, circa 1946.
Born in Solo in central Java, Abdullah was taught to paint by his father, Abdullah Suriosubroto (1878-1941), a prominent landscape painter and one of the pioneers of Indonesian modern fine art in the early 20th century. Both were among the most sought-after Mooi Indië (Indonesian beauty) artists, a school that tends to romanticise their subjects. Examples of his work can be found in the Indonesian National Gallery.
