  • Dadd visited Jerusalem in November 1842, while travelling through Europe and the Middle East with Sir Thomas Phillips, the former mayor of Newport in Wales.

  • This work is inscribed 'Jerusalem from the House of Herod' verso. A preparatory pencil sketch for this work can be found in the collection of the V&A museum, London. It forms part of Dadd's 1842 sketchbook and is numbered '87' and inscribed 'Jerusalem'.
