Footnotes
Lewis travelled to Egypt late in 1841, and remained there for ten years before returning to England. Along with Daivd Wilkie, David Roberts and William Müller, he was one of the first Orientalist artists, interested in contemporary Arab life, as well as the ancient ruins that fascinated other Englishmen living and working in Northern Africa at the time. This character study is typical of Lewis's work of the period.
