Lot Details
[ST. CLAIR, ARTHUR.]
Manuscript Document, 1 p, folio, Fort Washington, Northwest Territory, December 1, 1791, being the November return of 7 companies of the 2nd United States Regiment, under the command of Arthur St. Clair, signed by R. BISSELL, Lieutenant, nearly split at centerfold with a few tiny chips, light spotting, few creases and some edge-wear.

St. Clair’s men had been utterly routed on November 4, 1791 in the worst defeat of the American Army by Native Americans in history, the Battle of the Wabash. The present return shows 101 non-commissioned officers and soldiers killed in action,18 deserters and 50 missing. After the defeat, St. Clair’s men marched three and a half days in wintry weather only to reach Fort Washington and find that there were no provisions for them. They bivouacked along nearby Deer Creek with insufficient shelter and clothing. Morale was at an all-time low and desertions continued to be rampant. See Guthman, March to Massacre. A History of the First Seven Years of the United States Army.
