An American full-stocked flintlock rifle and pipe tomahawk by Jacob Welshans, Sr.
circa 1780-1800
Comprising: 1) Rifle, the octagonal 44 3/4 inch .52 caliber barrel with breech marked J. Welshhans within groups of stamped stars. Unmarked lock. Brass furniture comprising: fore-end cap; three cylindrical ramrod thimbles with banded tips; flat, shaped counterplate; faceted triggerguard with squared finial; engraved patchbox with scrolling finial; buttplate with faceted finial. Full striped maple stock carved with reeded panels along the fore-end and belly of buttstock. Checkered wrist set with oval silver escutcheon. Reeded cheekpiece surmounted by a silver compass star, the buttstock behind incised with a C-scroll with two branches. 2) Pipe tomahawk, the brass head with dovetailed iron edge, the blade with pierced scroll and maker stamp J. Welshhans. Removable bowl. Striped maple haft. 3) Together with an iron door latch also marked J. Welshhans.
Condition: 1) Rifle, very good. Metal with dark patina showing areas of spotting/light pitting. Stock with scattered marks, cracks to right side below fore-end cap, 7 1/2" x 1/4" silver missing from left side of fore-end and showing old repaired break through wrist and showing a replaced piece at the front of the comb. 2) Pipe tomahawk, brass fine, iron edge showing dents. 3) Door latch showing areas of pitting overall.
