An English pillow pommel officer's spadroon
circa 1790
Straight 29 1/4 inch double edged blade of partly hexagonal and partly diamond section engraved and gilt on both sides with scrollwork, panoplies, the royal coat-of-arms and motto, and on the central flat For My Country & King. Gilt brass hilt, the guard with five ball branch. Reeded elephant ivory grip set on each side with a gilt brass band. Black leather scabbard with gilt brass mounts, the throat inscribed Goldneys/Late Neild/St. James Street/Sword Cutlers to his/Royal Highness/Prince of Wales.
Condition: Blade showing patches of light pitting and retaining most gilt decoration. Hilt and scabbard mounts retain 50 percent plus gilt finish. Grip excellent. Scabbard very scuffed, with open seam but sound.
