Footnotes

  • There is only one other known example of this type of tankard which was formerly in the Dr. E. Roberts Collection and illustrated 'Pewter of Great Britain for Pleasure & Investment', C.A. Peal, Plate 2. Dr. Roberts proposed that the capacity allowed for the froth of ale & beer effervescing & foaming whilst being poured.
Illustrated and the significance of the capacity and whether it is an example of a 'Thirdendel' is discussed in the following editions of 'The Pewter Society Journals': April 1976 pp.15-16; September 1976, pp.20-22; Autumn 1977, Vo1.1, No.2, pp.21-22 and Vol.10, No.3, Spring 1996, pp.112-114.
