Footnotes

  • Provenance:
    from the collection of King George V of Hanover;
    on loan to Provinzialmuseum Hanover, Fedeikommiss-Galerie, 1905 No 149.

    The picture was probably moved to Schloss Marienburg when the King built the palace for his wife Queen Mary. As the castle was her personal property, it escaped seizure by the Prussians when they annexed Hanover in 1866, thereby ending the kingdom. It is not known when the picture returned to the Schloss. It may well be that the dogs depicted belonged to the King, but in the absence of account books this is impossible to prove.
