A Great War D.S.C. and bar group of seven to Captain H.O.Joyce, Royal Navy,
Distinguished Service Cross, G.V.R., hallmarked for 1914, engraved on reverse (H.O.Joyce. 28th October 1914, with second award bar, engraved on reverse (1918); 1914-15 Star (Lieut H.O.Joyce. D.S.C. R.N.); British War and Victory Medal with MID Oakleaf (Lieut H.O.Joyce. D.S.C. R.N.); Defence Medal; War Medal; Netherlands, Order of Orange Nassau with swords, Commander's neck badge, in silver-gilt and enamel. The medals mounted as worn, the last in case of issue. With corresponding miniatures and another British War Medal (Lieut H.O.Joyce. R.N.). The mounted WW1 medals later official replacements, the other BWM damaged. (Lot)

    H.M.S. Vestal. For bombardment operations off the Belgian coast 17th October -8th November 1914. Admiral Hood's despatch of 11th November 1914. Lieutenant Joyce was in HMS Vestal (sloop) and was badly wounded by a shell, but rallied his men to attend the wounded, and then got his gun into action.

    The bar for U Boat action, whilst he was in command of HMS Onslow. On 25th February 1918 HMS Onslow was escorting a convoy at the western end of the English Channel. A torpedo was fired at her, but passed underneath. She followed the track and dropped 5 depth charges. The U Boat's bows came up slowly and vetically, then listed over to port and sank. More depth charges were dropped UB-17 had been destroyed.

    Sold with certificate and statutes for the Order of Orange Nassau. Letter for unrestricted wear of the Order of Orange Nassau from the Admiralty.
