Francis Newton Souza (India, 1924-2002) Reclining Nude
ink on paper, signed and dated '56 upper right, stamped lower right, framed 20 x 25 cm.
Provenance: Private UK collection; acquired directly from the artist.
Souza's classical reclining nude is here expressed with exquisite strokes, altogether sensual, sure and slashing. The economy of line is testament to the artists mastery as a draughtsman and his compulsive love of the female form in all its presentations. 'The pure beauty of line' as George Melly remarks, is without hesitation. He goes on: 'For me the proof of a proper and accomplished draughtsman is this: that he or she can, in drawing an arm, leg or whole body, allow us to know at once that the space between the lines defined and without chiaroscuro, encloses an apparently solid object, muscle, skin, folds bone and all'.
