The story of Susannah and the Elders, frequently depicted in European art, features in the Apocrypha to the Bible. Susannah rejected the advances of two elders, was falsely accused by them - they claimed to have seen her in flagrante with a young man beneath a tree - and condemned to death. Her innocence was proven by Daniel, who questioned both of the accusers separately about the kind of tree under which the incident was alleged to have taken place. Each of them named a different tree.
