    Note:
By 1870, with the Civil War at an end and critics decrying images of its horrors, history painters either had to take a new approach or turn their brushes to other subject matter. With the nation reunited, and as Americans planned for the celebration of their centennial, a new spirit of nationalism arose. Artists, architects, writers, composers and others sought to foster patriotism through nostalgia in an attempt to convince American audiences to take a positive view of their early history. Boughton's 'New Year's Day in New Amerstdam', an invented scene of 17th century Dutch New York, provides a preview of the literally hundreds of works related to American historical events and characters created after the centennial to satisfy the needs of printmakers, magazine publishers and calendar manufacturers for sentimentalized American historical scenes.
