Footnotes

  • A fine collection of first editions. Herbert Strang, actually the pseudonym of two writers (George Herby Ely and James L'Estrange), was seen as the obvious heir to G.A. Henty after his death in 1902. "It has become a commonplace of criticism to describe Mr. Strang as the wearer of the mantle of the late G.A. Henty... we will go further, and say that the disciple is greater than the master" (The Standard, quoted by Eric Quayle). This collection includes first editions of Strang's first six books, and many other early titles. Quayle drew particular attention to the early science fiction novels, with their covers depicting extraordinary air and sea crafts "of the future".
