Album, [by J.S. Evans], 24 pages on stiff card (including title on watered silk), each with gilt-stamped decorative border, many partially hand-coloured, 2 with fine watercolour botanical drawings, and one with pencil drawing after A.W. Callcott within the borders, publisher's velvetine binding, gilt outer borders, the upper cover with design of Royal crown, laurel leaves, the motto "Honi soit qui mal y pense" and ornate cornerpieces in gilt thread, the crown embellished in coloured threads (a few missing), similar leaf design on spine, cream watered silk endpapers, the inside covers with wide hand-coloured illuminated vellum borders to a design of a flowering stem (thistles, roses, poppies, etc.), g.e., preserved in solander box, folio, [c.1850]

  • A fine example of a Victorian album by Joseph Stuart Evans, a London binder who exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851. Several of the ornate illuminated pages are gilt stamped by Evans and two of the leaves have very accomplished watercolours of flowers. For an example of Evans' work see Ramsden, London Bookbinders, 1956 (plate 6).
