GIBEON — NATURAL SCULPTURE FROM OUTER SPACE EVOKES THE WORK OF BARBARA HEPWORTH
Iron, fine octahedrite
Gibeon, Great Nama Land, Namibia

This meteorite was recovered from the edge of the Kalahari Desert and is extremely rare in that it is among the finest aesthetic iron meteorites known—meteorites do not typically look like this. Like the previous lot, this specimen was part a much larger mass that slammed into Earth’s atmosphere thousands of years ago before raining down on what is now Namibia. Local tribesmen located this meteorite with the aid of metal detector in 1991; their predecessors used other Gibeon meteorites found on the surface of the African veldt to fashion spear-points and other tools. This sleek tabletop specimen, which is evocative of the sculpture of Barbara Hepworth, possesses an asymmetrically positioned near-perfect scoop of sufficient depth to form a naturally formed hole—an extremely rare feature in meteorites of this size The obverse features an additional large scoop at the meteorite’s left edge and two identically-sized and tangential smaller scoops. With a bright platinum patina and compelling from all perspectives, this objet d'art from the asteroid belt was featured in New York Magazine [2/3/2003]. Provenance: the Macovich Collection—the preeminent collection of aesthetic iron meteorites. 275 x 190 x 83mm (10.75 x 7.5 x 3.25 inches) and 12.4 kilograms (27.4 pounds).
