Footnotes

  • The major work of early photography in India, which rarely appears on the market.

Tripe was appointed photographer to the British Mission at the court of Ava, Burma in 1855, and then went on to publish for the Madras Photographic Society before being appointed official photographer by the Madras Presidency in 1856. Madura was the first and most extensive of the six major works published by Tripe on the surrounding urban areas, the other five areas being Tanjore and Trivady, Poodoocottah, Ryakotta, Seringham, and Trichinopy.

The two missing plates appear to be 'East Front of the Puthu Mundapum' (part 2, no. 1), and 'Hall on the north side [of the Quadrangle of the Palace of Tirumalnaik]' (part 4, no. 10,).
