Footnotes

  • Francis Frith’s most celebrated, and influential work "which set new standards in technical excellence" (ODNB). It was published on Frith's return from his second trip to the Middle East, during which he travelled to Palestine, Syria and up the Nile, and includes the best images from both this, and his first voyage the region in 1856.

"Frith travelled in his photographic van which he had brought out with him from England: a wicker-work carriage which served both as a darkroom and sleeping quarters... from his vivid accounts of the numerous problems which this tour raised, some idea can be formed of the skill, resource, and patience needed in working with collodion in the hot and dry climate, and the speed which every stage of the manipulation had to be carried out while the collodion was still moist" (Gernsheim, The Rise of Photography 1850-1880, 1988).
