Footnotes

  • ONE OF ONLY NINE KNOWN CAMERON 'PORTABLE GALLERIES', CONTAINING NINE NEW IMAGES UNRECORDED BY COX & FORD.

The present album, one of two that Julia Margaret Cameron prepared for her son Hardinge, contains some 112 of her photographs, ranging from studies of great men to tableaux vivants, family portraits, literary scenes, and religious images. Several of the images are unrecorded, and there are two reversals of known negatives, adding substantially to Cameron scholarship. "The sequencing and subtle juxtapositions... suggest that Cameron considered all her photographs to enjoy equal status. They were all reproductions, in miniature, of the real works of art. To her, each image was important because it originated from a large-format original that received her individual attention and artistic judgment" (Philippa Wright).
