The son of Abraham Willaerts, Adam trained under his father before studying with Jan van Bijlert in Utrecht and Simon Vouet in Paris. In 1624 he became a master of the Utrecht Guild of Saint Luke, and later between 1637 and 1644 he was in Brazil in the entourage of Count John Maurice of Nassau-Siegen. In 1659 he was in Naples and Rome. Abraham Willaerts's work follows closely that of his father but he was to introduce a more atmospheric softness and realistic treatment as the present lot demonstrates.
