Footnotes

  • Susan Morris has dated the present work to c.1800. Girtin stayed at Harewood House in 1798 and in 1800 he made a further trip to the north. Around this time Edward Lascelles, the son of the 1st Earl of Harewood, commissioned a version of the present work, currently in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, together with a pair of views of Harewood House and a Distant view of Knaresborough. It is probable that this work is a study for the Victoria and Albert Museum watercolour.

To be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the watercolours and drawings of Thomas Girtin by Susan Morris.

We are grateful to Andrew Wilton and Dr Susan Morris for their assistance in cataloguing this lot.
