While the overhead camshaft Nortons stole the headlines, it was the overhead valve engined road bikes that proved to be the backbone of production for Norton, the Model 18 Norton in particular proving its mettle in no less than four separate decades. The Model 18 featured Norton’s familiar engine dimensions of 79x100mm with a capacity of 490cc. In 1933 when this bike left the factory, Norton offered no less than 12 different models and the Model 18 retailed for £59/10s in solo form. This excellent example, first registered in York in May 1933, has been in the present family ownership since 1934 having been acquired by the vendor’s uncle that year when it was one year old. It passed to the present owner 39 years ago and in 1991 this family heirloom was treated to a comprehensive restoration by Norton specialist, the late Roy Cunliffe of Ilkley. The invoices recording this restoration are available on file for inspection. The machine is extremely smartly presented in all departments with mechanical condition commensurate with cosmetic presentation. The bike is offered with old style log book from 1957, together with Swansea V5 and V5C documents.
