During World War 2 it quickly became apparent that the 350cc Matchless, particularly in tele-fork-equipped G3L form, was an excellent off-road machine. AMC capitalized on this after the war, mainly under the AJS badge – both makes being basically identical – and with successively developed versions became the dominant force in trials before the invasion of lightweight two-strokes. As a result, four-stroke trials have continued to the present day, resulting in today’s strong market for suitable machines. This AJS was built as such a short-wheelbase trials machine, using an all-alloy competition engine, lightweight wheels and all of the right parts for the job. It makes no pretence to be anything other than a re-creation but has been very well done. In excellent condition, having proved to be both powerful and tractable, and with V5C, current MOT and Road Tax (exempt) until January 2007 it is ready for the coming pre-‘65 events and can be ridden away from the sale with confidence.
