Footnotes

  • Thought to have been built in 1323 by John de Lilleburn, who was keeper of Dunstanburgh castle, Lilburn tower was originally used as a watchtower. An almost identical view of the tower was painted by Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) in 1797 which hangs in the Tate Britian, London.
