The imposing case with pagoda top and three ball and spire finials over elaborate pierced sound frets and free standing brass-mounted stop-fluted columns, the 12 inch arched brass dial set with a half-silvered/half-blued spherical moon within a star-studded recess in the arch, flanked by twin subsidiaries for date and strike/silent centred by a shallow sector for the moons age, the silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring signed between VII and V, with finely matted centre and large subsidiary seconds dial, the substantial movement united by seven knopped pillars, deadbeat escapement striking the hour on a single bell and sounding the quarters on a nest of eight bells 2.89m (9ft 6in) high.

Footnotes

  • John Ellicott was born in 1706, the son of a clockmaker of the same name. He was one of the outstanding clockmakers of the 18th century, producing a large number of quality clocks for the home market and export, a longcase clock by Ellicott with similar spherical moonphase can be seen in the Spanish Royal collection. John Ellicott developed his own form temperature compensated pendulum and was instrumental in the perfection of the cylinder escapement. He was clockmaker to King George III and was paid 150 pounds per annum as was George Lindsay (watchmaker). He worked from St Swithins Alley, Royal Exchange, London.
    Ellicott was elected a fellow of the Royal Society on the 26th of October 1738. He published two articles on clocks and also an equation of time table in their Philosophical Transactions for the Society.
    Ellicott supplied portable regulators to astronomers notably; Nevil Maskelyne, Charles Mason and James Cook for the recording of the transit of Venus. Ellicott was also a keen astronomer and observed the transit of Venus in 1761 from an observatory built in his home in Hackney.
