Footnotes

  • Provenance: from the private collection of a titled Flemish family.

The Holy family theme is a late arrival in Christian art and hardly emerges before the 15th century, when it is seen in the painting of both Northern and Southern Europe. The theme of the three generations, grandmother, mother and child, found favour with the artists of northern Europe and is often representing in Bruges landscape painting of the early 16th century.
