A candlelight market scene signed and dated 'Petrus van Schendel fct/1836' (lower right) oil on panel 48 x 39.5 cm. (18 3/4 x 15 1/2 in.)
The present lot is typical of the compositions that van Schendel produced between 1834 and 1839. For similar compositions, see Sotheby's Amsterdam, 23 April 1991, lot 165 (painted 1834), Sotheby's Amsterdam, 18 October 2005, lot 178 (painted 1837), and Christie's Amsterdam, 26 October 1995, lot 192 (painted 1834). The neo-classical architecture in the background seems to be inspired by the former town hall of Rotterdam, the town where van Schendel lived between 1832 and 1838.
We are grateful to Dr. Jan de Meere for confirming the authenticity of the present lot from photographs, and for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
