Footnotes

  • It will probably never be known whether this pair of paintings by Peter Monamy depicts actual events in the life of a specific ship or is simply the product of the artist’s imagination. If the former hypothesis is considered however, several vessels of the Royal Navy were accidentally destroyed by fire during the late seventeenth century, three of which – ‘Defiance’ (burned 1668), ‘Henry’ (1682) and ‘Half Moon (1686) – were all lost in the Medway, the apparent location of this particular scene. Supporting this view is the strong resemblance of the fortified building on the far left shore to Upnor Castle, the traditional guardian of the Medway during its long association with the navy. Possibly commissioned by the captain of the warship at the time of her loss, the companion painting presumably records an earlier incident in the ship’s life when she survived the battering of a severe storm at sea.

Although all three of the ships’ fires mentioned above occurred before Monamy’s painting career commenced circa 1704, he painted many retrospective works during his career and, in fact, no other similar incidents to that depicted here took place in his lifetime after the loss of the ‘Half Moon’ in 1686.
