Footnotes

  • For a similar set see lot 126, 9th November 1999, Phillips sale, also: Frank Greygoose: Chessmen, David and Charles, 1979, figure 129, page 124. This set is modelled on the set held by The Museum of London, which was originally presented to Samuel Pepys by King James II. This set is illustrated in Donald M. Liddell's Chessmen, 1976, plate 29. Note the close resemblance to the design of this example, for most of the copies are interpretations of the original form. This example differs in that the stems are shorter and the ovoid bases are not as flattened.
