An early-mid 19th centuryCalvert style ivory chess set
One side stained red the other left natural, the kings and queens with everted, pierced petalled crowns surmounted by turned finials, the bishops with open mitres, knights carved as horses' heads and pawns with spherical finials, all with turned baluster stems and circular, moulded bases, the rooks as towers, king 8cm, pawn 4cm, in a late George III mahogany box, with an ivory kite-shaped escutcheon, bearing maker's label 'G. Merrifield, fancy ivory worker and manufacturing turner... Holborn Chess & Draughtsmen and boards....', 18cm wide. (2)
