A good mid 18th century ebonised and gilt brass mounted quarter repeating bracket clock

The inverted bell top surmounted by a gilt handle over a moulded edge and circular and shaped side glazed panels, all edged with brass, to a plinth base with block feet, the 6 3/4 inch tall arched brass dial with eccentric silvered signature arc over a subsidiary dial for Strike/Silent and the Roman and Arabic numbered chapter ring enclosing the matted centre with mock pendulum aperture and date aperture at VI, the movement with five knopped pillars, twin fusees (converted to chain) and verge escapement striking the hours on a single bell and repeating the quarters on a nest of eight bells, the scroll engraved backplate centred by a signature cartouche 50cm (20 in) high.

  • Thomas Smith of Norwich wrote of his early years "I was three years under the tuition of that natedly ingenious clockmaker Wm Newman my father-in-law late of this City......was forwarded by Edward Brooks late of Duck Lane, West Smithfield London and serv'd my regular apprenticeship with Marmaduke Storr, Clock and Watchmaker in Lombard Street, London, whose equal character was excelled by none in that City."

    On 8th October 1748 he took an advertisement in the Norwich Mercury to proclaim that he
    "Makes all sorts of Repeating and Common Clocks after the most methodical manner......upon the most reasonable terms, having reduced the Profits to the very lowest ebb......N.B. Clocks and Watches under care are dispatched with the utmost diligence to render them as useful as possible to the owners."
