Thomas Weaver was born into a Shropshire farming family and received some instruction in painting from John Boultbee. By about 1800 he had become a competent sporting and livestock painter and he had attracted wealthy patrons, among them William Coke, M.P. for Norfolk (later Earl of Leicester) and Viscount Anson. In 1808 he exhibited a portrait of ‘Viscountess Anson’s favourite mare’ at the Royal Academy and in 1814 and 1822 he exhibited at the Liverpool Academy. By 1841 he had become an invalid, crippled by what was probably arthritis, and moved from Shrewsbury to live with his son in Liverpool.
