near Las Vigas, Veracruz, Mexico
Amethyst crystals and clusters from the Las Vigas region of the state of Veracruz first appeared on the market over fifty years ago. While they are not necessarily the largest crystals as far as amethysts are concerned (those from Bolivia, Uruguay and Brazil are frequently larger), the crystals from Veracruz have become known for their well-formed hexagonal structure and for their rich violet color. The present specimen is an impressive matrix piece with divergent clusters of crystals on a grayish andesite rock matrix. The crystals are well-formed and exhibit excellent luster and the largest principal crystal measures a full 3 inches in length. Such an aesthetic grouping of crystals in clusters and on matrix has not been seen on the market in many years and especially not with such an exceptional violet hue.
