circa 1929-32
The rectangular quilted silk flag fringed on three sides, the center embroidered with the coat-of-arms of Puerto Rico. Mounted in a glazed giltwood frame with a typed label inscribed La Fortaleza/Puerto Rico/Memorandum/Official Flag of the Governor of Puerto Rico./This Flag Was Used By Former Governor Theodore Roosevelt II, During His Governorship Of Puerto Rico, And Was Presented To Commissioner Chas A. Goldsmith By Governor Rexford G. Tugwell June 20th/1944.
Condition: Fine. Showing some fraying in upper section.

Footnotes

  • Note: Theodore Roosevelt II, 1887-1944, eldest son of President Theodore Roosevelt. He served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, governor of the Philippines, as a Brigadier General in the U.S. Army and as governor of Puerto Rico from 1929-32. He became a popular figure in Puerto Rico and was known as the Farmer of the Fortaleza. (La Fortaleza was the governor's residence in San Juan) He served as a major, and eventually lieutenant-colonel, with the First Division in World War I. He was gassed at Soissons and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He served as a Brigadier General in World War II, although he suffered from arthritis and heart disease, and participated in the landing at Utah Beach. He died from a heart attack a month later.
