GREY, ZANE. 1875-1939.
AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT OF MAJOR PORTION OF ONE OF GREY’S MOST POPULAR FISHING BOOKS.
Autograph Manuscript, 158 pp, 8vo, n.p., n.d., being a draft of “The River of the Gulf,” plus a partial draft of “Rivers of the Everglades,” written on two hole lined sheets, leaves bound with string, some soiling and staining to first few leaves, toning throughout. Together with first edition of Tales of Southern Rivers (NY: 1924), lacking jacket.

This manuscript represents a good portion of the text published in 1924 as Tales of Southern Rivers. The first 101 pp comprise the essay published as “Great River of the Gulf (Gulf Stream).” Here Grey makes the unusual argument that the Gulf Stream that moves through the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico acts like a river rather than an ocean, and fishermen should know this when fishing the waters. The second essay describes fishing in the Everglades among the alligators, mosquitos, and Seminole Indians. From the latter essay: “At six o’clock in the morning a soft pink glow suffused the east. Though it was clear daylight the air appeared full of mist, and the dark lines of mangrove forest were dim and mystical. A cool fresh balmy damp breeze came from off the water … Presently I heard the soft surge of a rolling tarpon. That was music to expectant ears. Capt Thad said he saw one break water down the creek. Soon I saw a big transparent fin split the water upstream….”
