CRUIKSHANK, GEORGE. 1792-1878.
The Comic Almanack[s]. London: 1835-1848, 1850-1852. 18 volumes (plates only). 350 unseparated india proofs engraved by Cruikshank mounted to paper (93 sheets), predominately in fours. Sheets measure mainly 435 x 295 mm to 500 x 338 mm, though some are smaller. Loose sheets in custom cloth clamshell case, gilt-lettered claret calf label to upper cover and spine. Some sheets with mild spotting, short tears or mild toning, several creases, a few with light stains, some marginalia in pencil, but generally very good, case with upper cover detached, some general wear.
Proof copies, most years with a set before and a set after letters. Many examples with penciled annotations and/or autograph titles and a few signed by George Cruikshank. An interesting collection of proofs, some apparently the printer's copies as evidenced by Cruikshank's penciled titles. Proofs for the 1849 Almanack are not present, but according to a listing provided, none are known to exist.
Provenance: Bibliographer Captain R.J.H. Douglas with a detailed typed list that states these are from the Douglas Collection; noted collector William Hartmann Woodin, with his bookplate.
