With deep well, the rim inscribed "For the Greyfriars' Kirk Edinburgh 1733". 47cm diameter.
This dish is of German or Low Countries origin. The word Greyfriars' is engraved on a plate applied over the original inscription and the likely explanation is that the dish was re-dedicated from another Edinburgh kirk. The dish itself would appear to date from circa 1700 and the present inscribed date of 1733 was probably added when the dish was re-engraved. The relative scarcity of brass in early 18th century Scotland meant that this was an established practice.
Greyfriars Kirk currently displays another South German brass alms dish featuring Adam and Eve.
