Footnotes

  • Note : Peploe visited the Breton island of Brehat in 1911, apparently with JD Fergusson.
Few paintings are extant from this series, but there is an example in the SNGMA and another illustrated in Billcliffe, R, 'The Scottish Colourists', London, 1989, plate 42.
All display "pattern and a simplification of perspective"..."optical mixing of primary colour to create depth" (ibid, p36), but unlike the others which have the characteristic "nervous" brushstroke Billcliffe describes the above picture is more fluid and painterly like the Royan and Luxembourg Gardens pictures of 1910.
