Footnotes

  • Note : Left to right, the saints are:
ST BRIDE, Abbess, 6thc. See note on reredos
ST COLUMBA, Abbot and missionary, 6thc. Symbolises the advent of Christianity in Scotland
ST AIDAN, Bishop and missionary, 7thc. Came from Iona to Lindisfarne to found the monastery.
ST BEE, Nun, 7thc. A Cumberland nun, originally from Ireland.

These panels range from the strikingly decorative and relatively modern appearance of Columba, through the more traditionally picturesque and legend-incorporating St Bee, to the French-influenced almost rustic naturalism of Bride and Aidan.
