Left to right, the saints are: ST HILDA, Abbess, 7thc. Born into the Royal House of Northumbria, she was inspired to leave Iona to found the monastery in Whitby by St Aidan. ST OSWALD, King and martyr, 7thc. One of the kings of Northumbria, who gave Aidan the land to build the monastery on Lindisfarne. Martyred at the battle of Maserfelth. ST COLMAN, Bishop, 7thc. An Irish monk who lived as a hermit for seven years in a cave, and founded the monastery at Kilmacduagh. ST EBBA, Abbess, 7thc. Oswald's sister. Founded the nunneries in Darwent (Durham) and Coldingham, Berwickshire.
